This enabled our generation to hear ourselves through media, listen to celebrities, and also have a laugh within a culture we identify with. Unfortunately we no longer have such a strong presence in local media that is authentically local and authentically Maori.
We asked 100 rangatahi from the Horowhenua and Manawatu area to list three things that they would want to see in an online tv type show targeted at their demographic, the majority chose:
b) Celebrities; and,
c) “Funny Stuff”.
And mostly, in that order.
Our aim is to mould all of these elements together to produce a web series that will inspire, motivate and entertain the diverse realities of young people within our rohe while being appealing to a national audience.
The web-series will be fast paced, with young people’s attention spans in mind. The style will be similar to Magazine TV (Iamtv, ex-TVNZ), but reworked for the modern online audience. This series brings a more localised focus, creating interesting and teen appealing content from within our district.
Humour will play a large part in this online series, creating segments that are deemed quite serious in nature, but we turn them into mini drama comedy sketches that will appeal to youth while being educational.
Our webisodes incorporate a medium to high Te reo Māori component coupled with relevant and real expressions of the vibrant and continuously evolving rangatahi movement that is shaping the popular culture in Aotearoa.
Television viewing is on a decline amongst youth, but through social media, online viewing is on a steady increase. We aim to use this to our advantage through an online marketing campaign to gain a nice momentum for a growing audience.
We will be creating a website where the series will be played, along with youtube and facebook channels.
