We provide $19 million of direct funding to Whakaata Māori (Māori Television Service) every year.
Whakaata Māori is New Zealand’s indigenous broadcaster, providing a wide range of local and international programmes for audiences across the country and online.

Their founding legislation, Māori Television Service Act 2003, ensures the organisation’s commitment and statutory obligation to:
- be a high quality, cost effective television provider which informs, educates and entertains;
- broadcast mainly in the Māori language; and
- consider the needs of tamariki participating in immersion education and anyone else learning Māori.
